Antike Stätten am Mittelmeer

Zusammenfassung

Unteritalien ist geprägt durch karge Berglandschaften und fruchtbare Flußebenen an den Küsten des ionischen Meeres (Adria) und des tyrrhenischen Meeres (Mittelmeer). In der Antike bestand dieses Gebiet aus drei großen Regionen: Lukanien, das nach dem Bruttier-Aufstand 356 v.Chr. Bruttium genannt wurde, umfaßte das heutige Kalabrien und die Basilicata, aber auch Teile des südlichen Kampaniens. Das antike Kalabrien lag auf der Halbinsel von Salento und war ein Teil des heutigen Apulien, das schon in der Antike so hieß. Kampanien lag nördlich des Flusses Sele und bezeichnete ursprünglich das Kerngebiet um Capua. Im heutigen Abruzzo und Molise in Mittelitalien wohnten verschiedene Völker, deren größte Gruppe die Samniten bildeten.
