Das Interesse dieser Analyse gilt ausschließlich der Präsentation des jüdischen Lebensentwurfs des Protagonisten Artur Sammler durch Bellow, entsprechend der in der Einleitung aufgeworfenen Fragestellung. Der Kritiker Sanford E. Marovitz beschreibt die Identitätsproblematik wie folgt:
Am I or do I want to be a secularized American, an assimilated Jew, or a Jewish alien on the margin of a secular national culture reflective of a chiefly Christian past? The identity of a Jewish character is determinable not alone through self-knowledge but through his or her relation to home, that is to the United States or any small part of it […].92
