Abstract
Middle English courtesy books for young girls and women are analysed in this article with regard to written models of gender specific behavioural control, in particular with regard to the interpretation and evaluation of emotions. Analysed with a modern as well as a specifically medieval concept of emotion in mind, in its emphasis on action and interaction the normative genre of the ›courtesy book‹ is crucial for the development of a late medieval culture of emotions. Four levels of textual analysis show this: 1) the selection and evaluation of women’s feelings, 2) the attempt to regulate emotional expression with the aim of controlling feeling, 3) the emphasis on the outcome of women’s feelings on the partners with whom they interact and 4) the evaluation of other people’s feelings. What becomes obvious in the context of notions of virtue and vice is the marked responsibility attributed to women for their own emotions but also their responsibility with regard to the feelings of men. Women are required to follow a complex regime of emotional management in interactive situations so that social relations and social order may be maintained.
