Zusammenfassung

John Stuart Mill (1806–1873) hat der Nachwelt ein umfangreiches Werk hinterlassen, das neben vielbeachteten wissenschaftlichen Abhandlungen und publizistischen Essays u. a. auch eine Autobiographie umfasst. Im Rahmen der Interpretation der politischen Schriften Mills wird die 1873 posthum erschienene Autobiography meist ganz selbstverständlich zur Deutung seiner Lehren herangezogen. Eldon J. Eisenach ist gar der Ansicht, dass Mills Autobiography als wesentlicher Teil seiner politischen Theorie betrachtet werden könne: »By this is meant that we can treat the Autobiography as part of Mill’s ›text‹ and not as something ancillary or external or contextual to the ›real‹ text, that is, to his substantive and systematic political theory« (Eisenach 1998, 209).
