Zusammenfassung
›Verhalten‹ (mhd. ›verhalten‹) ist ein Wort, das ursprünglich im Bedeutungskontext der Zivilisierung und Selbstdisziplinierung des Menschen stand. Das zugehörige Verb (mhd. ›verhalten‹, ahd. ›firhaltan‹) hat die ältere Bedeutung »zurückhalten, hemmen, unterdrücken, sich benehmen« und ist als Negation von Ableitungen (›halten‹) aus der indogermanischen Wurzel ›*kel-‹ hervorgegangen, die so viel wie »treiben« bedeutete und sich auf das mit Lärmen verbundene Treiben von Vieh bezog.
