Zusammenfassung

Wie viele literaturhistorische Epochenbegriffe legt auch der Begriff ›Moderne‹ eine Geschlossenheit nahe, die durch die Texte selbst keineswegs bestätigt wird. Er bezeichnet (und verdeckt) nicht nur die Vielzahl sehr unterschiedlicher und zum Teil auch antagonistischer Theorien und Praktiken, sondern verwischt auch die zeitliche Entwicklung der modernen Kunst und Literatur, ihre deutliche Gliederung in verschiedene Phasen. Insofern wäre es wohl richtiger, die Moderne von vornherein als Plural zu verstehen. Als Singular ist sie bereits ein Produkt hierarchisierter Wahrnehmung, ein Konstrukt der Kritik.
