Abstract
Research in social sciences on the subject of big cities is today still insufficiently developed in France, especially if compared with the level of NorthAmerican scientific production. Generally, with the exception of urban geography, which has succeeded in building new programs on already solid theoretical and empirical foundations, the other disciplines appear to have been discovering the city only since the end of the 1980s, helped in this by a certain number of strong institutional incentives coming from public research, such as PIR-Villes of the CNRS (Programme Interdisciplinaire de Recherches sur la Ville)1. French work carried out in such domains as urban economy2 and urban history3 is both scattered and rare.
