Zusammenfassung
Der Wettbewerb findet nicht mehr ausschließlich innerhalb nationaler oder gar regionaler Märkte statt. Waren und Dienstleistungen können ungehindert zirkulieren und der Kunde kann sich den Anbieter auswählen, der das für ihn günstigste Angebot offeriert. Diese Flexibilität besteht nicht nur für den Bezug von Produkten, sondern ebenso für die Produktion. Um den neuen Anforderungen nach einer hohen Flexibilität bei gleichzeitiger hoher logistischer Leistungsfähigkeit gerecht zu werden, werden zunehmend engere Kooperationen zwischen Unternehmen umgesetzt, in die jeder Beteiligte seine Kernkompetenzen einbringt. Das einzelne Unternehmen tritt in den Hintergrund, stattdessen wird eine übergreifende Betrachtung der Prozesse angestrebt. Die übergreifende Steuerung und Planung von Waren-, Material- und Informationsflüssen entlang der Wertschöpfungskette ist unter dem Begriff „Supply Chain Management“ (SCM) bekannt geworden. Aufgrund der geänderten Marktbedingungen werden zukünftig nicht mehr einzelne Unternehmen mit einander in Wettbewerb treten, sondern ganze Wertschöpfungsketten (Carrie 2000).
