Zusammenfassung

Die belgischen Frauen mußten länger für ihre politischen Bürgerrechte kämpfen als viele ihrer europäischen Schwestern. Vollständiges Wahlrecht auf allen politischen Ebenen wurde ihnen erst nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg (1948) gewährt, obwohl die erste Belgierin bereits 1921 ins Parlament einzog, als Frauen bei Nationalwahlen ihre Stimme noch gar nicht abgeben durften1. Während die neue Frauenbewegung in anderen Ländern für das Selbstbestimmungsrecht über den eigenen Körper und das Recht auf Berufstätigkeit stritt, richtete sich der vereinte Kampf der belgischen Frauen auf eine Rechtsreform. Nach belgischem Gesetz hatten Ehefrauen bis Ende der 70er Jahre einen ähnlichen rechtlichen Status wie geistig Behinderte und waren nicht voll geschäftsfähig, sondern benötigten für vieles die Unterschrift ihrer Ehemänner. Der Kampf um die Kontrolle über den eigenen Körper dauerte bis 1990, als Belgien als letztes europäisches Land — mit Ausnahme von Irland — die Abtreibung unter besonderen Umständen erlaubte.
