Abstract
Tactile maps offer good access to geographic information for blind people. However, compared to maps for sighted people, they are inconvenient to make and contain less information. Therefore, the authors developed and implemented prototypical techniques, by which visually impaired people can explore a geographical area flexibly with the help of a computer. With the concept of virtual tactile maps presented here multimedia techniques of interaction are used to support the geographical orientation of members of the aforementioned group of users. The design of a system is presented which captures static hand gestures through a video camera and produces acoustical output. The information in the digital map data used is adapted to the requirements of the users and the respective interaction. In this paper, the development of the prototype and first experience with it are presented.
