Zusammenfassung
In vielen Zivilisationen haben bestimmte chirurgische Verfahren eine tiefe kulturelle und soziale Bedeutung. Die männliche Beschneidung ist beispielsweise von großer Wichtigkeit als ein Symbol religiöser und ethnischer Identität und hat in der politischen und gesellschaftlichen Geschichte vieler Völker eine große Rolle gespielt (Remondino 1891). Die weibliche Beschneidung ist ganz besonders mit kultureller Bedeutung aufgeladen, weil sie eng mit der weiblichen Sexualität und mit der reproduktiven Rolle von Frauen in ihren Gesellschaften zusammen hängt.
