Zusammenfassung
Das zentrale Wertesystem einer Gesellschaft zeigt sich in vielen Bereichen des kulturellen Lebens, aber nirgends wird es offensichtlicher als im kulturellen Umgang mit dem Körper, und dies ganz besonders, wenn dieser Körper die neuen Gesellschaftsmitglieder hervorbringt, die die Zukunft der Gesellschaft, in die sie hinein geboren werden, sichern sollen. Die Zukunft einer Gesellschaft sicher zu stellen bedeutet nicht nur, für ihr physisches Überleben zu sorgen, sondern auch für die Fortsetzung des Glaubenssystems, das bestimmt, in welcher Weise ihre Mitglieder die Welt um sich herum wahrnehmen. Ein Teil dieses Glaubenssystems muss sich mit der Frage befassen, wie diese Gesellschaft sich in ihrer Beziehung zur natürlichen Welt und zu den natürlichen Fortpflanzungskräften, auf denen ihre fortdauernde Existenz beruht, definiert. Daher können wir davon ausgehen, dass dieses Glaubenssystem in der kulturellen Arena der Geburt nachdrücklich zum Ausdruck kommt.
Technologie ist eine universale Funktion der menschlichen Gesellschaft, aber Technokratie ist ein kulturell spezifisches System aus Mythos und Ritual, das in Europa und Nordamerika zwischen dem 17. und dem 21. Jahrhundert entwickelt und verbreitet wurde. (Reynolds 1991)
