Auf den Spuren des Körpers in einer technogenen Welt

Zusammenfassung

Seit Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts beschrieben Ärzte in Europa und Amerika weibliche Übergangsphasen mit wachsender Beharrlichkeit als eine Abfolge von Ereignissen, die medizinischer Aufsicht unterworfen werden sollten. Obwohl die Passage durch einen Lebenszyklus immer gleichzeitig ein sozialer und ein biologischer Vorgang ist, wurde in medizinischen Fachkreisen — vielleicht nicht überraschend — die zentrale Aufmerksamkeit mit immer mehr Intensität auf die Veränderungen in der Körperphysis gerichtet. Das Ergebnis davon war, dass zwar viele Individuen ein geschärftes Bewusstsein für das chronologische Alter entwickelten, die subjektive Reifungserfahrung und die assoziierten Veränderungen in menschlichen Beziehungen aber als belanglos an den Rand gerückt wurden. Diese Situation wird heute im öffentlichen Diskurs breit reflektiert, besonders in Bezug auf das weibliche mittlere Alter.

Das nenn ich ein braves Mädchen.

Sie ist ein natürlicher Rohstoff, zum Glück ein nachwachsender, weil diese Dinge sich so schnell abnutzen. Heutzutage sind sie auch nicht mehr das, was sie mal waren. Billigware. (Atwood 1997, S. 41–42)
