Zusammenfassung

Bereits A. Werner (1866–1919), Pionier der Koordinationschemie, beschäftigte sich mit mehrkernigen Metallkomplexen. Die Mehrkernigkeit wurde durch Brückenliganden erzielt, direkte Metall-Metall-Bindungen lagen nicht vor. In der modernen Komplexchemie spielen Metall-Metall-Bindungen eine bedeutende Rolle, u.a. sind sie auch am Zustandekommen von Metallatomclustern beteiligt.
