Abstract
The municipality, the smallest independent regional administrative unit in the state, is the object of many sciences. Law, administration, and economics, statistics, sociology, and, comprehensively, history and geography are concerned with it. For the geographer, the municipality as settlement and territory is a limited area of the cultural landscape. Grown in long spaces of time, being a significant cultural good, it means substance and scene of modern life as well.
