Zusammenfassung
Auch aus der populärwissenschaftlichen Literatur ist inzwischen hinreichend bekannt, daß es in den Geowissenschaften der Festen Erde in den letzten zwanzig bis fünfundzwanzig Jahren eine Revolution des Denkens gegeben hat. Man ist vom sogenannten fixistischen Denken abgekommen, nach dem die Bewegungen innerhalb der Erdkruste, also deren Mechanik oder Tektonik, sich im wesentlichen in vertikaler Richtung — nach der Art eines Fahrstuhls -abspielen. So sollten Gebirge, wie etwa die heutigen Alpen, im wesentlichen durch Heraushebung der Erdkruste gebildet worden sein, während anderswo -wie etwa in der benachbarten Po-Ebene — durch Absenkung der Kruste große Tröge entstanden, welche mit mächtigen Sedimenten gefüllt werden konnten.
