Zusammenfassung

Einschätzungen der Rolle, die Gleichaltrige in derEntwicklung Jugendlicher spielen, sind ambivalent. Einerseits wird in den Peers ein wichtiger Kontext gesehen, der Gelegenheiten zu Austausch und Exploration sowie Orientierung und Hilfe bei der Bewältigung von Anforderungen bietet (Noack, 2002; Oerter & Dreher, 2002; Steinberg, 1999). Gerade in schwierigen Situationen sollte danach Freunden und Bekannten im selben Abschnitt der lebenslangen Entwicklung eine besondere Bedeutung als soziales Stützsystem zukommen. Andererseits erscheinen aber auch Annahmen plausibel, die im Peerkontext Probleme verorten. Damit sind gestörte Beziehungen und soziale Isolation angesprochen, vor allem aber Probleme, die durch eine Affiliation mit den „falschen“ Freunden entstehen sollen. Inzwischen herrscht allerdings eine eher positive Sicht der Peers und ihrer Einflüsse vor. Gleichaltrige und Eltern werden von den meisten Jugendforschern nicht als antagonistische Kräfte gesehen.
