Zusammenfassung

Bei der Untersuchung der Lebensbedingungen, d.h. der sozioökonomischen, kulturellen und administrativen Rahmenbedingungen der japanischen Unterstadt ‹shitamachi›, ist die Auseinandersetzung mit den Nachbarschaftsvereinigungen, den sogenannten chonaikai, unumgänglich. Diese auf der Basis der japanischen urbanen Gesellschaft wirkenden Organisationen werden auch jichikai oder chokai genannt. Es handelt sich dabei um selbständige und selbstverwaltende Organisationen der Wohnbevölkerung, in geographisch klar definierten Quartieren oder deren Teilausschnitten.
