Zusammenfassung

Die Produktionsperspektive entstand Mitte der 70er Jahre aus einer Verbindung zahlreicher und weit gestreuter Forschungsarbeiten, die alle zu dem einfachen, aber zwingenden Schluß kamen, daß die bei der Herstellung kultureller Symbole benutzten gesellschaftlichen Arrangements den Inhalt und die Beschaffenheit der produzierten Symbole beeinflussen. So stellten beispielsweise Harrison und Cynthia White (1965) in ihrer Untersuchung über die Entstehung des Impressionismus im Frankreich des 19. Jahrhunderts die damals herrschenden Theorien in Frage, denen zufolge Veränderungen in der Kunst mit gesellschaftlichem Wandel oder dem Auftauchen einiger künstlerischer Genies einhergehen. Statt dessen fanden sie heraus, daß das bisherige System akademischer Kunstproduktion aufgrund innerer Widersprüche zusammengebrochen und es der von Pariser Kunsthändlern und Kunstkritikern etablierte Kunstmarkt war, der den Impressionisten ihren Aufstieg ermöglichte.
