Zusammenfassung

Wozu eine Anthologie über zeitgenössische amerikanische Soziologie am Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts? Heißt das nicht Eulen nach Athen tragen? Unser Zeitalter wird ohnehin das „amerikanische Jahrhundert“ genannt und das dürfte sich auch im nächsten Jahrtausend so schnell nicht ändern. Schließlich leben wir in einer Ära globaler Interdependenz, und es stellt sich die Frage, ob es so etwas wie nationale Soziologien noch gibt und es folglich Sinn macht, sie in einem Band vorstellen zu wollen. Haben wir es nicht längst mit einer globalen Disziplin zu tun, einer Weltsoziologie in der Weltgesellschaft? Was wollen dann die sog. „indigenen“ Soziologien, die auf Eigenart und Eigenständigkeit pochen? Und konkreter: Wie sehen die Beziehungen zwischen amerikanischer und deutscher Soziologie aus? Was lehrt uns ihre Geschichte, und wie läßt sich die heutige Situation charakterisieren?
