Zusammenfassung
Historischer Hintergrund der relativen Unterentwicklung Irlands ist seine ökonomische und politische Kolonialisierung durch Großbritannien. Aufgrund des gewaltsam hergestellten gemeinsamen Marktes wurde die Entwicklung einer eigenständigen irischen Industrie blockiert. Der irische Markt wurde von der dominanten britischen Industrie versorgt und die Wirtschaft auf die Bedürfnisse des britischen Marktes zugeschnitten. Zwischen beiden Ländern entwickelte sich eine geradezu klassische Arbeitsteilung zwischen Zentrum (Großbritannien) und Peripherie (Irland)1, in der Irland Agrarprodukte (vor allem Schlachtvieh) gegen industrielle Fertigwaren lieferte. Lediglich in Ulster, dem heutigen Nordirland, konnten sich Industrien in den Bereichen Textilien und Schiffsbau entwickeln, die aber mit der Teilung der Insel 1922 von der Republik Irland abgetrennt wurden und im Vereinigten Königreich verblieben. Ausdruck der Unterentwicklung Irlands ist das chronische Defizit, für seine Bewohner Arbeitsplätze zu schaffen. Seit der großen Hungerkatastrophe in den Jahren nach 1848 ist die Auswanderung der Weg gewesen, um mit diesem Problem umzugehen: 1841 lebten noch 6,5 Mio. Menschen auf dem Gebiet der heutigen Republik. Diese Zahl fiel zwischenzeitlich auf unter 3 Mio., wobei die Abnahme bis in die 60er Jahre dieses Jahrhunderts anhielt (1961: 2,8 Mio.). Seit der Unabhängigkeit von Großbritannien haben rund 1,5 Mio. Iren das Land verlassen.
