Abstract
If one were to consider the German entrepreneurs most responsible for the 19th century’s second industrial revolution, scarcely more than a hundred family names would suffice: a tiny constellation of individuals, many of whom knew each other personally (Kocka 1975). And yet this small population can hardly account for the importance of their organizations. Engineers’ role in modern bureaucracies is analogous. Technical people rarely make up more than 5 per cent of total employees, yet they wield special skills and control organizational means that influence the world of the firm far more than mere numbers alone can explain (Chandler 1977, 464–465; Chandler 1969). If nothing else, the disproportional influence of engineers makes their communities ideal subjects for collective biography.
