Zusammenfassung
Gesellschaftstheorien unterscheiden sich u.a. darin, welche Rolle und Bedeutung sie der öffentlichen Kommunikation und den Massenmedien zusprechen und was sie von ihnen im Hinblick auf gesellschaftliche Integrationsleistungen fordern oder ihnen überhaupt zutrauen (vgl. B. Peters in diesem Band). Die Sozialphilosophie des amerikanischen Pragmatisten John Dewey (1859–1952) mutet ihnen viel zu. Dewey sah die Herausforderung der Moderne darin, durch eine besondere „Kunst der Kommunikation“ (art of communication) eine „Große Gemeinschaft“ (Great Community) zu stiften, in der die Demokratie zur vollen Entfaltung gelangt. Gesellschaftliche Integration ist für Dewey an vitale Öffentlichkeiten gebunden, durch die soziale Interdependenzen sichtbar und zum Gegenstand gemeinsamer Deliberation werden können. An Deweys Philosophie knüpfen heute in den USA führende Protagonisten eines Public Journalism (oder Civic Journalism) an, die sich für eine Erneuerung des Journalismus einsetzen. Ihr Ziel sehen sie in einer Belebung öffentlicher Kommunikation und einer stärkeren Partizipation von Bürgern in der Politik. Die kürzeste Definition von Public Journalism, die einer seiner Begründer einmal gab, lautet einfach: „what Dewey meant“ (Rosen 1999b: 24).
