Zusammenfassung
Die jahrelang von bundesdeutschen Politikern erhobene Klage, die amerikanischen Medien behandelten Deutschland nach Umfang der Berichterstattung stiefmütterlich, darf mit dem Einsetzen der Übersiedler-welle aus der DDR seit Ende September, spätestens aber seit der Öffnung der Mauer Anfang November 1989 als überholt gelten. Noch nicht absehbar ist allerdings, ob damit auch das bisherige Deutschlandbild einer dauerhaften Revision unterzogen wird oder ob sich nicht im Gegenteil seit längerem erkennbare und thematisierte Befürchtungen über die Entwicklung der Bundesrepublik noch verstärken werden. Besonders deren Verläßlichkeit als Bündnispartner und die ihr unterstellte Bereitschaft, aus nationalem Egoismus zu bereitwillig auf Gorbatschows Offerten einzugehen, werden möglicherweise noch mehr, als das in jüngerer Zeit bei der Auseinandersetzung um die Beteiligung deutscher Firmen am Bau einer Giftgasfabrik in Libyen, um die Modernisierung atomarer Kurzstreckenraketen und um die Rolle der Bundesrepublik als Wirtschaftskonkurrent auf dem Weltmarkt der Fall war, die kritische Aufmerksamkeit der amerikanischen Öffentlichkeit auf sich ziehen. Mehr denn je ist anscheinend für die Regierung Bush die Frage von vorrangigem Interesse, ob ein vereintes Deutschland weiterhin der NATO angehören wird. Bereits im Winter 1989 glaubte der neokonservative Publizist Irving Kristol eine Abnabelung der Bundesrepublik vom westlichen Bündnis feststellen zu können, als er im Wall Street Journal schrieb: “What is happening to NATO can be simply put: West Germany today is in the process of seceding from NATO - slowly, grudgingly, reluctantly, but the secession is under way.”
