The problem of finding solutions to word problems on the elementary school level have traditionally been delegated to the math class and later to such subjects as physics, chemistry, or calculus. The delegation of these to such subject areas seems justified at first glance, because the aim of assignments using word problems is to drill logical operations within a particular subject. Linguists take a different view of this appropriation. A written assignment has two components — besides the purely arithmetical task, it also has a linguistic component. In mathematical considerations, the numerical component is overemphasized, whereas the understanding of the meaning of the text itself is neglected. The solution to this paradox will not be found by banning word problems in language classes. Instead, the linguistic aspects and criteria used in cognitive psychology should be integrated into the task of of presenting and analysing word problems.
