Stilfragen mögen zum Teil auch Geschmacksfragen sein, jedoch geht es beim Programmieren um mehr: ernsthafte Programme sind lang, z.B. so lang wie dieses ganze Buch. Die Aufgabe des Programmierers ist in den Worten von E.W.Dijkstra, „... the art of organizing complexity, of mastering multitude and avoiding its bastard chaos as effectively as possible“ [14, S.6]. Hauptanliegen des Programmierers muß es daher schlicht sein, korrekte Programme zu schreiben, d.h. solche, die das tun, was sie tun sollen.
