Die Nullhypothese beim χ2-Test für die Varianz nimmt an, daß die Varianz einer normalverteilten Grundgesamtheit einen vorgegebenen Wert habe. Unter der Annahme von H0: σ2 = σ 20 ist die Testfunktion
χ 2n-1 -verteilt. Da S2 eine erwartungstreue Schätzfunktion für σ2 ist, sprechen kleine s2 bzw. v für eine kleine und große s2 bzw.v für eine große wahre Varianz. Man wird also für H A : σ2 < σ 20 einen linksseitigen, für H A : σ2 > σ 20 einen rechtsseitigen und für H A : σ2 ≠ σ 20 einen zweiseitigen Test durchführen.
