Abstract
In metastable initially homogeneous systems due to fluctuation processes clusters of a new phase can be formed. If such a heterogeneous state — cluster in the medium — is generated by some manipulations on the system, then some work has to be done from outside. The minimum value of the work needed to create the cluster is called the work of formation of the cluster, which can be calculated by eq. (2.68).
