Zusammenfassung
In den Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaften beschäftigt man sich häufig mit Fragestellungen, bei denen auf theoretischer Ebene Abhängigkeiten zwischen Variablen modelliert werden. Diese Abhängigkeiten werden dann anhand eines Datensatzes empirisch überprüft (Ghauri und Grönhaug 2002). Beispielsweise könnte der kausale Zusammenhang zwischen dem Kaufpreis eines Produkts und dessen Herstellungskosten von Interesse sein (Backhaus, Erichson, Plinke und Weiber 2003, S. 339). Eine Überprüfung dieser Aussage unter Zuhilfenahme empirischen Datenmaterials ist verhältnismäßig leicht durchzuführen. Es handelt sich nämlich sowohl beim Kaufpreis als auch bei den Herstellungskosten um Konstrukte, die unmittelbar messbar sind und aus diesem Grunde als manifeste Variable bezeichnet werden.
