Zusammenfassung
Lettland wurde 1991 nach 51 Jahren der Zugehörigkeit zur Sowjetunion wieder ein unabhängiger Staat. Das gegenwärtige politische System des baltischen Staates wird von zwei Erbschaften geprägt: zum einen von dem Gedanken der Identität mit der ersten lettischen Republik, die zwischen 1918 und 1940 existierte, und zum anderen von der Hinterlassenschaft aus der Zeit der sowjetischen Besetzung.
