Summary
The commercial data processing covers a very broad field, beginning with manual accounting and extending over the use of accounting and punched card machines up to the application of electronic high-speed data processing systems. In this paper only problems of mechanized data processing are dealt with, and those also only as far as mechanization takes place by means of punched card machines, electronic computers or data processing systems, thus emphasizing that branch which is commonly termed “electronic data processing”.
The author tries to derive a systematic classification of the problems encountered in data processing, thereby relying on the possibility to represent the data flow of an industrial or commercial plant by a control circuit. Since the reduction of information (condensation of data) is believed to be one of the main characteristics of data processing, it appears quite natural to take the density degree as the classification principle. Besides that, also some other criteria of classification are discussed: Number of card-registers (files) involved, time sequence of work procedure, organisational concepts.
The investigation of the main data processing problems which occur within the various types of enterprises leads to a result which, at the first glance, seems to be surprising: Regarding a practical procedure in introducing a mechanized data processing, we sometimes find greater differences within the same type of enterprises rather than within enterprises of different types.
As a conclusion, some special problems of data processing are discussed, in particular, possibilities of testing and checking the electronic processing of data, the man-machine relationship and the economy of electronic data processing.
