Summary
In this article an attempt is made to analyze some of the effects that the modern, large-scale, electronic digital computers have had upon the general area of applied mathematics. Broadly, these effects are divided into two categories: those which relate to the impact of the new machines on numerical analysis and those which refer to the opportunity given to the mathematicians for gaining heuristic insights into the areas that have as yet proved inaccessible by more conventional means.
In discussing the first category, four types of errors that can arise in calculational work are analyzed in some detail. There is a quite lengthy digression which serves to illustrate some of those sources of error; it is concerned with an application of the adjoint system to the error problem.
In the latter portion of the article, there are discussed those areas of mathematics which are still unpenetrable by current analytical means and which might be amenable to computational attack.
