Summary
Two things are of essential importance for a progressive development of the programme controlled computer art: Progress in the structure and organization of the machines (logical design) and new technical developments of components. For the construction of the first computers, now fifteen years ago, available elements were used and proven switching techniques were taken over, particularly from punched card machines and telephone dialling engineering. However, it soon turned out that there was a strong necessity of designing novel components and of developing new techniques especially suited for computers. This trend determined the efforts in the following years which were characterized by a rapidly pushed development of new switching and storage elements. After this first run somewhat of a consolidation in the construction of computers was expected which as a matter-of-fact at least partly occurred: The technology of the “first generation“of computers grew up, which techniques are in general fully under control to-day, comprising advanced thermionic tube-, diode-, and magnetic core circuits of a rather satisfactory maturity. We are presently confronted with a second stage of development; it is of much more diversity than the first one since problems from nearly all branches of basic physical research are involved in a much higher degree than ever before. This development belonging to a sphere of main interest to the computer engineer forms the subject of discussion in this contribution. The success of these technical developments will determine the face of the computers of the second and third generation.
