Summary
The information processing machine produces results which can otherwise be obtained only by human thought processes. By a purely external analogy names like “thinking machine“ or “electronic brain“ were introduced and came into wide use. As a reaction to such a simplification, in the other extreme, the denial of any relationship was postulated. The present stage of development allows a fairer and more critical assessment of the actual situation — obviously, the truth lies between the two extremes. A critical presentation of the nature of the automaton will be ventured upon. To begin with, automata and thought processes, which are the basics of this essay, are analysed from the point of view of one skilled in the automation engineering art. Exact definitions cannot emerge in this way; it is possible only to summarize and critically review work already published.
Structurally, the basic processes concerned are reproduction, reduction and expansion of information. A meaningful definition of cybernetics is the application of an information-theory “Gedankenmodell“ to natural processes or organisms. The basic imaginative models, e. g. the famous “artificial animals“, are described. The solution of specific problems such as learning, composing, game-playing, and problem solving by machine have also been attempted; this field, however, is still in an evolutionary state. In general, it may be said that in contrast to the possibly apparent behaviouristic similarities there still exists a fundamental difference in the way of looking at machines and looking at human beings.
