Die westeuropäischen Gesellschaften im Vergleich

Zusammenfassung

Die Veränderungen im Bildungswesen sind einer der fundamentalen Wandlungsprozesse in der jüngeren Geschichte der Länder Europas und anderer moderner Gesellschaften. Grob gerechnet verbringt heute annähernd die Hälfte der nachrückenden Generationen etwa ein Viertel ihrer Lebenszeit in Bildungsinstitutionen. Die meisten Kinder werden mit drei oder vier Jahren in eine Stätte der Kinderbetreuung aufgenommen und viele von ihnen bleiben dann mehr oder weniger kontinuierlich für eine reichlich lange Jugendzeit bis zum Ende des dritten Lebensjahrzehnts in einer der vielfältigen Einrichtungen des Bildungssystems. Die dort erworbenen Qualifikationen sind eine wichtige Grundlage für den materiellen Wohlstand der ökonomisch fortgeschrittenen Gesellschaften. Umgekehrt ermöglichen erst der Reichtum dieser Gesellschaften und der hohe Stand der Technik die verbesserte Versorgung zunehmend größerer Bevölkerungsgruppen mit Wissen und anderen Bildungsgütern. Die erweiterte Bildungsbeteiligung wiederum kann als bedeutsamer Faktor für den Wandel in anderen gesellschaftlichen Bereichen gelten, u.a. in den Wertorientierungen und in der Lebensführung von Menschen oder im Ausmaß und in den Formen der politischen Partizipation.
