Zusammenfassung
Die politische Entwicklung des palästinensischen Autonomiegebiets in der Westbank und dem Gazastreifen war im Jahr 1996 durch die bislang härtesten Belastungsproben für den Friedensprozeß zwischen Israel und den Palästinensern gekennzeichnet. Palästinensische Terroranschläge, die Wahl einer israelischen Regierung nomineller Oslo-Gegner, eine forcierte israelische Siedlungspolitik und schließlich der palästinensische “Tunnelaufstand” — nach der tendenziellen Rückverlagerung des politischen Geschehens von der Diplomatie zur offenen Konfrontation wird sich erst mittelfristig erweisen, inwieweit der Friedensprozeß de facto überhaupt noch Bestand hat.
