Zusammenfassung
Der Begriff der Zivilgesellschaft hat sich längst einen festen Platz in der Politikwissenschaft erobert. Dabei vorherrschend ist eine liberal-normative Auffassung, derzufolge die Zivilgesellschaft die Bürgerinnen vor der ständigen Ausbreitung des Staates verteidigt und ihm als Hort der freien Assoziation gegenübersteht. Hier soll Zivilgesellschaft hingegen analytisch, im Sinne Antonio Gramscis, verwendet werden. Dann nämlich kann sie in politikwissenschaftlicher Forschung als umfassende Klammer für die Vielfalt nichtstaatlicher Strukturen dienen, die zusammen mit dem Staat den Zusammenhalt der Gesellschaft organisiert, die regulierte Austragung von Konflikten gewährleistet und fortwährend die Legitimation der ökonomischen und politischen Strukturen eines Gemeinwesens garantiert.
