Zusammenfassung

Die Gleichsetzung britischer Geschichte mit einem notwendigen und eindimensionalen Prozeß englischer Expansion, in deren Verlauf das Vereinigte Königreich nicht nur an Weltgeltung, sondern auch stets an innerer Homogenität gewann, ist nicht nur historisch unhaltbar, sie wird auch von den heutigen politischen Realitäten widerlegt. Das Vereinigte Königreich vereint vier Nationen mit ausgeprägtem nationalen Selbstbewußtsein (Sturm 1981, 1994, 1994a). In der historischen Reihenfolge ihrer Einbindung (Act of Union) in das Vereinigte Königreich sind dies England, Wales (seit 1536), Schottland (seit 1707), Irland (1800–1921) bzw. Nordirland (seit 1920: Government of Ireland Act). Die unterschiedliche Qualität der Bindung der einzelnen Territorien der sogenannten „keltischen Peripherie“ an England bestimmt den politischen Handlungsrahmen in diesen Territorien und die konstitutionellen Konfliktlinien im Vereinigten Königreich entscheidend mit (Harvie 21995).
