Zusammenfassung
Konzepte der Identität, des Selbst-Bewußtseins und des Ichs, lange Zeit fixe Bezugspunkte unseres Umganges, unserer Beziehung zur Umwelt, zur Gesellschaft oder zur ‘Welt’ schlechthin, sind zunehmend in einen Zustand der Krise geraten. Persönliche Unsicherheit oder Fragmentierung, kollektive Instabilität oder das Schwinden lokaler bzw. nationaler Bewußtheit kennzeichnen den gegenwärtigen Zustand des Selbst (Hall 1996). Wo keine Identität mehr greift, bleibt höchstens noch ‘Identifizierung’: Anpassung an, Bestimmung durch oder Orientierung in ‘Diskursen’, ‘Gesellschaft’, ‘sozialen Strukturen’. Diese Problematik des Selbst ist ein zentrales Thema der Cultural Studies, genauso wie die Frage nach der Rolle und den Funktionen der Medien, die das Umfeld so sehr prägen, daß es als ‘Medienkultur’ oder ‘mediatisierte Welt’ charakterisiert werden kann.
