Zusammenfassung

Seit der ersten europäischen Ansiedlung 1788 hat Australien viele Einwanderungswellen aus Übersee erlebt. Im 19. Jahrhundert war es das Gold, das riesige Zuwandererscharen angezogen hatte, während die größte Einwanderung in diesem Jahrhundert nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg erfolgte, als Australien seinen Arbeitskräftemangel beheben und die Verteidigungsfähigkeit erhöhen wollte. Während der zwei Jahrhunderte europäischer Besiedlung wurde Australien urbanisiert, entstanden aus den ursprünglichen Kolonialhafenorten wichtige Großstädte. Da in den Hauptstädten meist mehr als die Hälfte der Bevölkerung der jeweiligen Einzelstaaten lebt, zieht es Zuwanderer in diese Städte, insbesondere in die beiden größten, Sydney und Melbourne. Dort bestehen die meisten Arbeitsmöglichkeiten und sind viele Zuwanderergemeinden und Hilfseinrichtungen angesiedelt.
