Abstract
The European Influenza Surveillance Scheme was founded in 1995 and included seven countries (Belgium, France, Germany, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and the United Kingdom). The Czech Republic and Switzerland will join in the season 1997/98.
The roots and hence experience of the group can be traced back to the Eurosentinel-(1987–91) and ENS-Care-project (1992–93), later the early warning system-Influenza until 1994.
The main objectives of the EISS-group are to provide actual information on the influenza situation in Europe in the sense of an early warning function, during the weeks that influenza epidemics are likely in this area, research in epidemiology, economy and virology of influenza as well as the comparability of the national data.
The weekly electronical data transmission as well as the presentation of the results is done by an internet application at the moment. The internet application has been developed on the basis of the scientific work that has been done regarding quality of the included data, comparability of the national data and experiences with previous computer based applications. During the next season pages for public access will be added containing a mapped overview of the situation in Europe as well as graphs of the clinical and virological data in each country including the national comments.
