Zusammenfassung
Innerhalb einer Generation hat die Weltwirtschaft umwälzende Veränderungen durchgemacht. In diesen Veränderungen spiegeln sich die zunehmende Globalisierung der Wirtschaftsaktivitäten, die wachsende Konkurrenz zwischen den Nationen um die Märkte und die weitreichenden Auswirkungen der Revolution im Kommunikations- und Informationsbereich wider. Höhere Produktivität und Wirtschaftswachstum sind in immer stärkerem Maße davon abhängig, wie Wissen und Informationen in der Warenproduktion und im Dienstleistungsbereich eingesetzt werden, und solches Wissen stützt sich immer stärker auf wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse. Das ist zwar kein völlig neues Phänomen, denn Wissen hat schon immer eine Schlüsselrolle bei der gezielten Förderung des Wirtschaftswachstums gehabt. Da aber die Wirtschaftssysteme komplexer werden, der Konsum sich immer stärker ausdifferenziert und die Konkurrenz wächst, werden Wissen und Informationen für die Produktions- und Verwertungsprozesse immer wichtiger.
