Abstract
The paper examines the formative force of early socialization experiences in internalizing the model of masculinity by exploring how immigrants encounter the models of manhood of the host society. We assume that an analysis of situations in which the homebred/original model of masculinity is placed in contact with new models of masculinity may provide important insights into the question of ‘being a man’ as well as illuminate issues concerning the force of the homebred model of masculinity in surviving cultural passage.
This paper is the result of a joint research project entitled “From ‘Being a Stranger’ to ‘Being a Local’: Personal Stories of Russian-Jewish Immigrants to Germany and Israel”. The research is supported by grants from the “Israeli Science Foundation founded by the Academy of Sciences and Humanities” and “The Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture”. It is also funded by the “The NCJW Research Institute for Innovation in Education”, and “The Levi Eshkol Institute for the Study of Israel’s Economy, Politics and Society”, both at the Hebrew University. Our heartfelt gratitude to Ms. Julia Lerner for her devoted assistance in all stages of this research and to Carole Kidron for her editorial assistance. Our deep appreciation is extended to the Russian students who shared their thoughts with us and taught us a great lesson about immigration.
