Zusammenfassung

Nur wenige Jahre bevor mit der 1957 verabschiedeten Rentenreform ein entscheidender Schritt zur Konstituierung des Alters als eigene Lebensphase unternommen wurde, erwies Leopold von Wiese (1954: 29) wenig Weitsicht, als er die soziologische Beschäftigung mit dem Alter als eine Modeerscheinung ansah, welche er binnen zehn Jahren für „ausgeschöpft“ hielt. Mit dieser Einschätzung sollte er sich jedoch gründlich getäuscht haben, denn es waren noch keine fünf Jahre vergangen, als Helmut Schelsky ([1959] 1965: 200) mit „der Entstehung der neuen epochalen Sozialstruktur [...] die intensive Entwicklung sowohl einer Alterswissenschaft überhaupt als auch einer speziellen Soziologie des Alters begründet“ sah.
