Zusammenfassung
Dem seit 1997 mit großer parlamentarischer Mehrheit der Pakistan Muslim League (PML) regierenden Ministerpräsidenten Nawaz Sharif gelang es auch 1999 nicht, seine zunehmend autokratische Herrschaft in Pakistan (P.) abzusichern. Vielmehr provozierten seine fortgesetzten Versuche, rechtsstaatliche und föderale Kontrollmechanismen außer Kraft zu setzen, schließlich eine landesweite Mobilisierung fast aller übrigen politischen Gruppen gegen seine Regierung, während ihm auch die Justiz wiederholt Grenzen setzte. Daß Sharif kaum eine Chance haben würde, sein fünfjähriges Mandat zu vollenden, war bereits Monate vor seinem Sturz durch das Militär (s.u.) absehbar.
