Women in the Labor Market in Russia

  • Chapter
Gender and Work in Transition

Abstract

The economics of shortage in a Russian planned economy secured full employment and effected a very high percentage of women participation in the labor market. Partly due to the enormous losses during World War Two and partly to the political priorities of the Soviet system, women also had access to jobs that are predominately male professions in most market economies. It would be, however, a nostalgic glorification of the past to deny that:

  1. a.

women were highly underrepresented in decision making structures

  2. b.

the vast majority of women were concentrated in a small group of professions

  3. c.

women were receiving, on average, lower wages than men
