Im Folgenden sollen die wesentlichen Grundzüge des hoch komplexen amerikanischen Gesundheitswesens (vgl. Anderson et al. 2003; Hsiao 2002; Huber, Orosz 2003; Bodenheimer, Grumbach 2002; Glied 1997; Brown 1994; Zelman 1996; Mühlbacher 2002; Dranove 2000) aufgezeigt werden. Im Zentrum der Betrachtung stehen dabei die Charakteristika der Leistungsfinanzierer.
