Zusammenfassung
Der Egalitarismus ist eine Ideologie, die der in einer ihrer verschiedenen Bedeutungen aufgefaßten Gleichheit den Vorrang vor allen anderen Werten einräumt, die in das Legitimitätsverständnis der westlichen Industriegesellschaften eingebaut sind. Tocqueville sieht in der Bewegung auf eine wachsende Gleichheit der Bedingungen hin eine langfristige Tendenz, die er mit halsbrecherischer Kühnheit dem Walten einer „Vorsehung“ zuschreibt. Doch das ist nicht alles. Er spezifiziert die verschiedenen Formen, in denen sich diese Tendenz darstellt. Die rechtliche Stellung der Personen wird mit der Beseitigung des Feudalismus egalisiert. So wird allen Individuen das gleiche Recht zuerkannt, Verträge abzuschließen, zu kaufen und zu verkaufen sowie sich zu verheiraten. Danach oder im Zusammenwirken damit folgt ein Prozeß der Egalisierung der politischen Rechte. Allen Männern, dann allen Erwachsenen beiderlei Geschlechts wird das Wahlrecht eingeräumt. Mit dem Anwachsen der Produktivität und des Wohlstandes unserer Gesellschaften schließlich wird die extreme Kluft zwischen arm und reich mehr und mehr verringert — oder jedenfalls mehr und mehr als ein Übel angesehen, das es zu bekämpfen gilt. Dieses sehr optimistische Bild kann um einen weiteren Aspekt ergänzt werden. Die Ungleichheit der Teilhabe an öffentlichen Gütern wie der Bildung, der Gesundheit und den verschiedenen Annehmlichkeiten des gesellschaftlichen Lebens wird fortschreitend so weit verringert, daß endlich alle Bürger des modernen Staats Anspruch auf den Genuß derselben Kulturgüter erheben können.
