Drei Ansätze beherrschen die empirisch-soziologischen Analysen des Wissenschaftssystems: Untersuchungen der normativen und sozialen Struktur von Wissenschaftlergemeinden (z. B. Hagstrom 1965; Cole und Cole 1967; 1968; Crane 1965; 1969; Zuckerman 1967; Blume und Sinclair 1974); Untersuchungen der organisatorischen Bedingungen wissenschaftlicher Produktivität und Kreativität (z. B. Marcson 1960; Kornhauser 1962; Pelz und Andrews 1966; Gordon und Marquis 1966; Saxberg und Slocum 1968; Smith 1970; 1971; Benson 1973); und historisch soziologische Fallstudien über die Entwicklung und Institutionalisierung wissenschaftlicher Disziplinen und Spezialgebiete (Mullins 1972; Cardwell 1972; Ben-David und Collins 1974; Lemaine 1975; Mulkay und Edge 1973; Stehr 1973).
