Media Research in Ireland

  • Chapter
Psychology of Media in Europe

Abstract

This chapter presents a brief overview of the media in the Republic of Ireland and then considers the current state of media research in Ireland. The latter is based on a brief survey of those Irish institutions that are concerned with any aspect of media research, i.e commercial firms and third-level educational institutions. Ireland does not have a specific research institute devoted solely to media research such as the Hans-Bredow-Institut in Germany. Apart from commissioning basic audience research, the public service broadcaster Radio Telefis Eireann (RTE) conducts very little research of its own. However, RTE does financially support some academic research activities in the various third-level institutions throughout the state (for an example see O’Connor, 1990).
